A complete architecture governance practice was designed around collaborative architecture processes. The appropriate architecture organization and roles were defined. We created an architecture repository and an initial data load was performed using various existing sources. We also built different architecture design templates in the system, which help the integrated planning of different initiatives across the company.

SAMU was set in action together with our best practice configuration pack virtually instantly. Architects surveyed the architecture and registered the data directly in the system, which then generated architecture diagrams of the different components and dependencies. On such graphs, any inconsistencies become immediately visible, which contributes to data quality to a great extent.

A united SAMU repository has been put in action to collect everything anyone knows about the architecture in a structured manner. Solution architecture plans are created in the same tool, showing the systems, interfaces, functions and services affected. Project planning happens in the same structure which provides a framework for scoping, evaluation and governance. SAMU also provides a dashboard for the management showing project statuses by application development cycles.

A common central SAMU repository has been created for architecture elements, which includes government reference models as well. The impact of eTransformation Plans can also be registered to show how the government-wide landscape changes. Management is provided with dashboards.

SAMU’s flexibility was used to a great extent to satisfy the meta-modeling requirements of the Waterworks. The tool contains application, data and technical components as well as programmable logic controllers (PLC) that operate wells. The repository was linked to the company’s standard change management processes executed in the workflow system. Access controls are set at both data and functional permission levels.

The Solution

One of SAMU’s prime capabilities is to visualize a large amount of data in a nice and engaging manner. Therefore we put it in action by fetching daily exports from the CMDB and visualizing physical resources and their relationships to logical layers and services. Users may use SAMU as a graphical layer of the existing CMDB to understand service trees, perform analysis and find the root causes of issues. What’s more, we used the same repository as the Service Delivery department has built.

The Solution

The SAMU tool has provided a flexible yet structured repository of all existing and planned services. Services are further broken down into logical and physical resources. New business demands are satisfied and products created by combining services. The service library is open to colleagues, and also serves as a communications engine of available resources within the company.

UPDATE: SAMU has been integrated to Magyar Telekom’s HP Service Manager application to supply united service information for IT operations. From now on operations people can also visualize service trees with a click of a button. Read more.

Emerging business demands are channelled to enterprise architects. They create a project architecture plan together with business analysts and other IT areas collaboratively for each demand. Plans live together with the projects and are used for decision making, budgeting, governance, and change approvals. Architecture plans are built in SAMU by reusing existing architecture elements and creating new ones.
